Ingredient Score

Rates how clean and safe the ingredients actually are. We cross-reference EWG ratings, INCI databases, third-party certifications (MADE SAFE, EWG Verified, EPA Safer Choice), and published safety research. A score of 10 means every ingredient passes our strictest criteria.

9-10: Excellent • 7-8: Good • 5-6: Mediocre • 1-4: Poor

Independence Score

Measures how free the brand is from corporate control. Founder-owned with no outside investment scores highest. VC-backed brands score lower. Brands acquired by conglomerates (Unilever, P&G, SC Johnson) don't make our list at all.
